Going Boldly

August 2014

Putting it all together

Over two years ago, God started mixing things up in my life.  I've mentioned bits and pieces about that in my introductory letter, and in conversations if you have talked with me in person.  Today, while I was thinking about writing my next newsletter, I was pondering the idea of a blog.  One place where all of my information could be, that people could go back to and look at without having to save all of my newsletter emails.  While I worked through this idea, I remembered that I had actually already started a blog, a while ago.  I wondered if it was still out there some place in cyber space, and sure enough, it is.
As I read through my blog posts from the spring of 2013, it was amazing.  It brought tears to my eyes and made me really grateful that I have those posts from that period in my life.  I though you might like to read them, too.  Rather than starting a new blog for this adventure in my life, I'm just going to add to what's already here.  Please feel free to read through my posts from last spring.  http://hisbigpicture.blogspot.com

The Start of a Plan

In May, I was asked if there was any way for me to get a hold of a few piano books.  There was a music class being held at the GF school.  There were 8-10 students in the class and they were all working from one copy of a Level 2, Bastian piano book.
I looked up the book, just to be sure it was the one I was thinking of.  I noticed that this particular piano book is published by a company called Neil A. Kjos Music Company.  I just happen to have a good friend that is a composer for this particular company.
I sent a message to my friend, Dean Sorenson, asking if we could talk about getting ahold of some piano books for this music class in Haiti.  He was more than happy to help me out and wanted to know exactly what I needed.
Being the type A, list maker that I am, I was happy to put together a plan.  Here's what I came up with:
  • 20 level one books - with the intention of starting a beginning level music class made up of students are interested in learning an instrument once the band program gets up and running.
  • 10 level two books - so that the kids who are already learning from this level book can have more than one copy to work from.
  • 10 level three books - so that when the afore mentioned students finish book 2, they can keep going.
I sent my list to Dean and he said it was no problem get the books I requested.  He ordered the books and had them sent to my house.  They arrived just in time to make the trip to Haiti last week with my friend, Tiffany.   Here's a picture of some of the Haitian staff members with the books.  Adelcon, the man in the black shirt, is the music teacher.  I think he looks pretty excited!

What's Next?

I love to be working on what comes next.  But, before I can, I need to be fully funded.  I have been working to meet with people and raise these funds for the last few months.  The hardest part for me is that I am being encouraged to call people and set up meeting times or ask for support.  I am having a hard time with this because I really don't like the idea of "cold calling".  Here's the request I put out on Facebook this week:
I'm looking to set up some meetings this week. I'm looking for people that would be willing to stand behind me in this mission by supporting me on a monthly basis. Everything in me is having a hard time picking up the phone and making "cold calls" to ask for your support. If you would be willing to meet with me this week (in person or on the phone) and be willing to open your heart and mind to hear more about what I'll be doing, would you please call me or send me an email or a private FB message. I'll even buy you a cup of coffee
And, if not, would you be willing to pray for me? Pray that God would raise up the supporters that I need. Pray that he would do so in a way that brings Him all of the glory and honor. Pray boldly that this would all happen in order for me to start working this fall.

This plea on Facebook was successful!  I am thankful that there were four commitments made from this request.  Therefore, I make the same request of all of you.

June is always such a crazy month for our family.  With the end of the school year, Andy and I working with the Buffalo Marching band, swimming lessons and play dates... we're busy.  Now add to that settling into our new home, a giant basement remodeling project, Creole lessons and my working to raise support, the month has flown by.

-We are settling into our new home, and our kids are making new friends in the neighborhood.
-I've started my Creole lessons.  I'm actually getting it, and having fun at the same time!

Prayer Requests
-That God would provide the remaining 77% of my funding by the end of the summer so that I can start working this fall.
-For my family.  That they would continue to adapt to our new home and that I would be sensitive to their needs during this time.
-For Andy.  As he works to finish our home project, works to finish a class he is taking, works to support me in this adventure and as he works his day job.

Tell me more...
FAQs about my new ministry
Over the past month it's been fun sharing more about my new position. Throughout many conversations there have been some frequently asked questions that tend to surface.  Let me address a few of them here:

Will you be moving to Haiti?
No.  I will be working part-time from home and traveling to Haiti two to three times a year. Global Fingerprints-Haiti (GF-Haiti) is a Haitian-led program.  The Haitian leaders are the ones doing the real work running the program and building relationships with the students and their families.  My role is to use my experience as a band director and setting up band programs to help equip a Haitian band director to run a successful band program at GF school.

When will you start?
My goal is to start this fall. I cannot officially start my work until I am fully funded.

What does fully funded mean?
Fully funded means that God brings a team of people around me who willingly give to support my monthly budget.  For me this is $1,854.00 a month.  In addition to this amount there are one time set of start up fees that equal $3,600.00. Once enough commitments have been received to cover these expenses, I can officially start my ministry!

What is the money allocated for?
The support I am raising covers a variety of expenses.  About 70% of my support will cover my salary of $1,000.00 a month (before taxes).  About 25% will cover travel (airfare, lodging, extra baggage) and about 5% will cover administration fees and language learning.  There is a small percentage that goes toward ministry overhead.  My start-up fees cover the expenses I already incurred during the application process (administrative work, screening, background checks, interviews, training, etc.) and the cost of a company computer.

How long will you be working in this capacity?
I have been accepted as "short term staff" and have made a 23 month commitment to GF-Haiti.

Why Haiti?
As trite as it may sound, this is all God!  It is obvious in retrospect that He has been sculpting me in preparation for this particular missions role for quite some time.  Taking my gifting and life experiences and adding to that the fact that our church played a key role in bringing the GF program to Haiti, the puzzle pieces fit together and led to this opportunity.

So, you'll be helping these kids find families?
Nope. These kids have families. GlobalFingerprints is a child-sponsorship program.  We partner with a local church in Haiti (Source de La Grace) to send children to school and help care for their physical, spiritual and emotional needs.

Your communication refers to ReachGlobal, GlobalFingerprints and EFCA.  What is the difference between them?
The EFCA is the Evangelical Free Church of America. The church we attended in Andover, Constance Evangelical Free, is a part of this denomination. ReachGlobal is the global missions ministry of the EFCA.  GlobalFingerprints is the child sponsorship program of ReachGlobal.

How do I join your support team?
If you receive this email/letter and lift me in prayer, you already are!  Prayer support is the most crucial part of my ministry.  If, in addition to that, you would like to be a part of my financial support team, I would love to talk with you personally about it.  Reply to this email (or give me a call) and I will get in touch with you.  If you know without a doubt that you would like to come alongside me as a financial partner you can do so herewww.efca.org/give-now
Please type "#2047-Richter" in the designation box.

I feel incredibly blessed by those who have committed to supporting me in this ministry. I am moving forward in faith knowing that God holds the details in His hands.

Men anpil chay pa lou ~ Many hands make it lighter.

Blessings!
Lynn

Special thanks for Tiffany for the idea!

Ongoing Prayer Requests
That God would provide the resources I need to get started on my work in Haiti.

That God would raise up a Haitian band director who is passionate about using music as a tool to help children see God and the hope and love he has for them.

For protection for my family and I as I do this work for God's kingdom.

For the rest of my team and the work that they are doing.

June Newsletter - Going Boldly

Going Boldly

Last week, my family and I settled into our new home in Edina.  This has been a long anticipated, and very drawn out process for us.  Now that we are here, I can focus more attention back on my mission in Haiti.
I will be starting Creole lessons next week.  Two of my GlobalFingerprints partners and I will be working with a local couple (she is from Minnesota, and he is from Haiti) to get to know some Creole before we are hit the ground in Haiti.
The other thing that I have been focused on is developing my ministry partnership team.  I sent out letters last week and responses are slowly trickling back in.  This is the biggest part of my job right now since I cannot actually "start" until I am fully funded.  I am trusting that God will provide the resources I need, both spiritually and financially, but I am human, and I am inpatient.  :)
Please consider joining my team.  I've included information below about how you can do that.  And, please keep praying for my family, my team and for me.
God bless you on your journey!

May Newsletter - Going Boldly! Music In Haiti

Since my last post in May of 2013, here's what's going on!

Music In Haiti

May 8, 2014

Going boldly where no band has gone before

After my short-term mission trip in Haiti last fall, I felt a strong calling to do more. I wondered how I could help the least of these in Haiti while still being the mom and wife God had called me to be. I prayed, I talked with my husband, I searched with a close friend who had also been on the trip. It felt like an eternity while I waited for God to tip His hand and show me what it was that He wants me to do.

While filling out the sponsor information on the GlobalFingerprints website, I noticed a note in the side banner. It said they were looking for someone to work with the GlobalFingerprints program in Haiti, from right here in the US. My soul was overjoyed! I submitted the information and then started sending emails and asking questions.

The answers that came back to me where clear and specific. God has called me to use the skills and experience I have to bring band to the sponsored children in Haiti.  Children involved in the program will experience all of the amazing things that go with learning an instrument: discipline, hard work, pride, success, fun and teamwork.  I will use this platform to open a new avenue of hope for these children and keep them off the streets of Port-au-Prince.
I pray that you would join me in this mission. Over the next couple of months I will be developing a ministry partnership team. Please prayerfully consider what your role could be. If you already know that you would like to join my team, please follow the instructions below.

God Bless you!
